Watchmaking historians & timepiece connoisseurs all over the world have known the Perrelet name for far greater than two centuries. Since the 1700’s, the Perrelet family has been at the forefront of Swiss watchmaking technology.
Abraham-Louis Perrelet invented the world’s very first automatic watch. Perrelet’s concept & creation was the “rotor wheel”; a rotating, oscillating weight mounted on a watch’s movement that harnessed energy from its wearer to self-wind the movement. Up to that point, all watches needed to be hand-wound each day. Perrelet’s new creation enabled a watch movement to self-wind; allowing a worn watch to run indefinitely. This industry-changing invention was officially recognized in 1777.
Further inspired by the concept of harnessing independent energy from the watch’s wearer, Perrelet created the world’s first “Pedometer”; a device that measured the steps & distance covered while its wearer walked.
Perrelet’s ingenuity and complete understanding of mechanisms lead to other widespread contributions to the watchmaking industry. Perrelet implemented fundamental toolmaking changes for making watch parts to to increase watch movement’s accuracy. Perrelet also was the first watchmaker to manufacture a watch with an “Escapement”. An Escapement is the part in a watch that controls the speed and regularity of the balance wheel, and thereby of the entire mechanism, by the movement of a special notched wheel; the escape wheel. One fine tooth is permitted to “escape” at a time from the detaining catch.
The Perrelet family had an exceptional passion for watchmaking as well as a high aptitude for mathematics & mechanics. Over many generations, the Perrelet’s forward thinking & problem solving abilities revolutionized the Swiss watchmaking industry; many of the mechanisms Perrelet invented still have impact on watches created today.
The Perrelet’s knowledge was passed on from father to son as well as generously among others in the watchmaking industry. The Perrelets worked with other fine watchmakers of the day, such as Louis Breguet as well as were appointed “Watchmaker-Mechanic” to three different kings of France.
Louis-Frederic Perrelet was the inventor of the flyback hand. This substantial new accurate measure for timing was awarded a patent in 1828 and a Medal from the Academy of Sciences in 1830. Perrelet’s chronograph counter with fly-back hand is proudly displayed at the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva, Switzerland.
Perrelet continues in current times to create outstanding self-winding watches based on Abraham-Louis Perrelet’s revolutionary 1777 creation. All of Perrelet’s handmade timepieces are manufactured & hand-finished completely in Switzerland by their elite staff of master watchmakers.
Perrelet’s latest introduction is a sophisticated timepiece that serves not only as a technical achievement but an aesthetic one as well; Perrelet has created the world’s first double rotor watch. This mechanism has an upper rotor, which is visible from the dial and a second lower rotor. This Perrelet technology improves on existing self-winding mechanical movements since it is able to draw energy from two rotors instead of one. The result is a faster and more stable winding function than on other automatic movements. These visually thrilling double-rotor timepieces have thoughtfully been created in both gents and ladies sized models.
